How to Connect Rust+ to Discord
Rust+ is Facepunch's official companion app - it pairs with your server and shows team status, events and smart devices on your phone. It doesn't talk to Discord on its own; that takes a bot in between.
Why people want it in Discord instead
Most Rust teams already coordinate in a Discord server, not a group chat glued to one person's phone. Phone push notifications get missed or buried, and Rust+ itself keeps no history - so there's no way to check back on what happened while you were offline.
Two ways to do it
You can self-host a bot like rustplusplus - free and open source, but you're running a Node.js process and keeping it updated yourself. Or you can use a hosted bot like rustchad, where you sign up, connect Discord and pair your server without maintaining anything.
Before you start
- Steam access to the Rust account you play on, for the pairing login step.
- A server with Rust+ enabled and reachable - pairing fails on servers where it's disabled.
- Permission to invite a bot to the Discord server you want events in.
- Permission for that bot to view and send messages in whichever channel you pick.
Pairing walkthrough
- 1
Sign up and invite a bot to your Discord server
Whichever bot you pick, this step is the same: create an account and give it permission to post in a channel.
- 2
Complete Rust+ pairing
Log into Steam through the pairing flow, then use "Pair with Server" from Rust's in-game Rust+ menu before the timer runs out.
- 3
Confirm events start posting
Once pairing succeeds, team status, smart devices and server events should start showing up in the channel you picked.
Doing this with rustchad
rustchad handles the hosting side of this - sign up, connect Discord, and pair your server through the same official flow. See Rust+ Discord Bot for what lands in Discord once you're paired, or our rustplusplus comparison if you're weighing self-hosting instead.
FAQ
- Do I need to keep a bot running myself?
- Depends which one you pick. Self-hosted options like rustplusplus need a Node.js process you keep online and updated. Hosted options like rustchad run the bot for you.
- Does pairing work with any Rust server?
- It works with any server that has Rust+ enabled and reachable - pairing goes through Facepunch's official Rust+ flow, the same one the companion app uses. Some servers disable or restrict Rust+, and pairing won't succeed there.
- What if pairing fails or times out?
- Keep the pairing page open and complete the Steam step first, then use "Pair with Server" in Rust before the timer expires - restarting the pairing flow usually fixes a timeout.
