How to Track Players in Rust
Keeping an eye on a specific player in Rust usually means one thing: repeatedly checking your server's BattleMetrics page to see if they're online. That works, but it means you're the one doing the polling.
The manual way: BattleMetrics
Most Rust servers are indexed on BattleMetrics, which shows a public, live list of who's currently online. You can search a name and see if they're connected right now - but the page doesn't notify you of anything. You have to keep it open and keep refreshing to actually catch a status change.
What people actually want: a notification, not a lookup
Checking whether someone's online right now is easy. Finding out the moment they log in - without babysitting a browser tab all evening - is the actual problem most people are trying to solve.
Automating it with rustchad
rustchad reads the same public BattleMetrics data through a browser extension and turns it into a watchlist: add specific players, and get a Discord alert when their status changes instead of refreshing a tab yourself. See Rust Player Tracker for the full setup and Free vs Premium limits.
FAQ
- Do I need RCON or a Steam API key to track a player?
- No. Presence tracking works off your server's public BattleMetrics page - there's no RCON connection or paid API key involved.
- Does this only work for players on my own team?
- No - that's the point. Rust+ only shows your own team; a watchlist lets you track anyone who plays on the same server, on your team or not.
- Is this the same as a Rust or Steam profile lookup site?
- No - a lookup site answers "who is this person." A watchlist answers "is this specific person online right now," repeatedly, without you checking.
